Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup

Penn March into Semis

Woodley Town 0 v Penn & Tylers Green 2

It wasn’t particularly pretty and it was never really convincing, but Penn reached the last four of the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup with a workmanlike performance against robust but modest opponents from the Reading League.

There wasn’t much between the two sides in the early exchanges; Woodley probably did the lion’s share of attacking but neither ‘keeper was unduly worried until Beales spectacularly denied Andy Goddard as the Penn midfielder burst through.

Thereafter, it was scrappy stuff in the blustery wind with Penn looking the more likely to break the deadlock. Hunt shot from the edge of the area after 32 minutes when he could have elected to carry the ball forward, but a minute later, the visitors did go ahead. Sturgess crossed from the right, Hunt touched into the path of Dean Allen who pushed the ball over the defence and into the path of Bellamy, whose volleyed finish from 15 yards was emphatic.

The second goal came on 41 minutes. Goddard surged through the centre of the Town defence and squared for Dean Allen to fire home confidently, again from some 15 yards out.

That ought to have settled Penn down, but after the break, it was Woodley who looked the more positive outfit for long spells and there was little cohesion in the Penn ranks. Sturgess did blaze over on 71 minutes and sixty seconds later, Goddard had the ball in the net from a good Sturgess cross, only for the goal to be disallowed as the assistant referee deemed the ball had gone out of play…one of several decisions which mystified and frustrated players and spectators alike.

That aside, most of the pressure continued to come from Town and the Penn ‘keeper twice made brave and telling last ditch saves to deny Payne as the home winger squirmed free from the defence.

Penn almost made the game totally safe in the last five minutes, when a poor back pass evaded Beales in the home goal, but the ‘keeper scurried back to hack clear as the ball looked set to trickle over the line.

So, as throughout the competition, Penn progressed without ever reaching top gear. However, they will need to be at their best if they are to make it into the final…they have been drawn to face nemesis club Chalfont Wasps in the semis at French School Meadows on March 1st and it will take an outstanding performance to stop the favourites from lifting the trophy for a third consecutive season.
